DEVELOPMENT AND CHARACTERIZATION OF BIODEGRADABLE FILMS PREPARED WITH JAMBOLÃO ANTHOCINE EXTRACT AND ALOE VERA

Introdução

In recent years, research has focused on developing biodegradable plastics to mitigate the environmental impacts of conventional plastics. This study aims to optimize biodegradable sodium alginate films by incorporating aloe vera gel (AVG) and jambolan anthocyanin extract (JE) as active ingredients.

Material e Métodos

The active components were characterized in terms of pH, acidity, soluble solids, moisture, and total solids, as well as their bioactive properties, such as total phenolics and flavonoids, and anthocyanin content. The films were produced by the casting method, and the optimization used a Central Composite Rotational Design (CCRD 22), with the dependent variable being the concentration of total phenolic compounds (TPC). Optical (color and opacity) and physical (swelling and Water Vapor Permeability - WVP) parameters were evaluated.

Resultados e Discussão

The results showed that both JE and AVG have physicochemical characteristics that can alter film parameters, such as low pH and high water content. JE demonstrated potential as an acid-base indicator, changing its colorimetric variables when subjected to different pHs. The optimal condition for the films was 29.49% AVG and 16% JE, resulting in a TPC of 1,303.29 mg GAE/100g. The optimized films showed higher moisture (28.97%) and swelling (88.18%) compared to pure sodium alginate films (18.69% and 83.39%). The addition of AVG and JE reduced the WVP of the films from 3.79 to 3.12x104 gm-1 s-1 Pa-1 and increased the opacity from 0.62 to 1.94. The films' colorimetric characteristics were also influenced, presenting intensities of red and blue and the ability to change color with different pHs, giving them an intelligent property. The addition of the additives did not affect the biodegradability of the films, which degraded completely in 19 days.

Conclusão

It is concluded that the incorporation of AVG and JE improved the optical and physical characteristics of the biodegradable films, especially in WVP and opacity, and provided acid-base indicator properties. Further studies are necessary to evaluate the effects of the films on stored products and other biological applications.
