ERYTHRINA MULUNGU EXTRACTS: PHYTOCHEMICALS AND ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY

Introdução

Erythrina mulungu is a plant belonging to the Fabaceae family and native to Brazil. The plant is medicinal and its main applications are in the treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders, respiratory and inflammatory diseases. There are few studies in the literature focused on the extraction of bioactives and assessment of antioxidant capacity. The objective of the work was to extract, by ultrasound, the chlorogenic acids and total phenolic compounds from Erythrina mulungu using different extracting solutions and evaluate the antioxidant capacity using the ABTS method.

Material e Métodos

The sample was acquired in the municipality of Casa Amarela, Pernambuco (8° 1' 25.948" S, 34° 55' 3.677" W), macerated and sieved (0.60 mm). 2 g of sample was used and 20 mL of three extracting solutions were added: distilled water; ethanol:water (50:50) and methanol:water (80:20). The extraction was carried out in an ultrasonic bath (QUIMIS, Q335D, São Paulo) at 70 W, for 15 minutes, at 50 °C. The extracts were filtered and quantified by spectrophotometry (1240 Shimadzu, Japan). Analysis of variance was performed using Statistic 7.0 software (5% significance).

Resultados e Discussão

The extract containing ethanol:water presented a significantly higher content of chlorogenic acids - CA (315.54 ± 12.55 mg CA/100g) and total phenolic compounds (167.34 ± 3.92 mg GAE/100g) when compared to the aqueous extract (201.39 ± 0.63 mg CA/100g; 99.44 ± 5.03 mg GAE/100g) and methanol:water extract (210.31 ± 8.84 mg CA/100g; 132.68 ± 3.05 mg GAE/100g). Regarding antioxidant capacity, the extract containing ethanol:water showed a significantly higher result in the percentage of ABTS radical scavenging (37.92 ± 0.90 %) when compared to the aqueous extract (25.05 ± 0.72 %) and methanol extract:water (32.48 ± 1.15 %),

Conclusão

a result that is associated with the highest levels of quantified bioactives. The extract containing ethanol:water showed better bioactive extraction results and antioxidant capacity. However, it is suggested that future studies carry out work to optimize the extraction of bioactives and toxicity tests.
